The Burden of Depression in Low-and-Middle-Income Countries and the Implementation of Evidence-Based Treatments Delivered by Non-Specialists to Treat Common Mental Disorders in Kenya
The SMART-DAPPER Project is a Sequential, Multiple Assignment Randomized Trial (SMART) for non-specialist treatment of common mental disorders in Kenya: Leveraging the Depression and Primary care Partnership for Effectiveness-implementation Research (DAPPER), funded by NIMH R01 MH113722-01A1 (SMART) GACD-NIMH R01 MH115512 (DAPPER). It is a collaboration between, the University of Nairobi, the University of California San Fransisco, Kenya Medical Research Institute, and Makerere University.
The overall goal of the SMART-DAPPER STUDY is to bridge the Mh-intervention GAP by Integrating within existing healthcare facilities, non-specialist delivery of evidence-based treatment for depression and/or PTSD: Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) delivered by non-specialists and SSRI treatment (Fluoxetine ) delivered by nurses and clinical officers (non-specialized in Psychiatry care).
Study design: Sequential, Multiple Assignment, Randomized Trial (SMART), Hybrid I with emphasis on Effectiveness. The study is guided by a RE-AIM model and a dynamic adaptation process based on the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, and Sustainment (EPIS) model.
